ZONE / NEW THINGS LAB

Movement first. Then the final look.

For the ZONE timer by New Things Lab, I developed a CGI product animation from a supplied CAD model. Rolling motion, changing light patterns and different environments show the product in action.

01 / THE BRIEF

Bringing movement and the light display together.

The animation needed to present the product and the behaviour of its light display. I coordinated the motion of the housing with the changing light patterns.

The backgrounds and visual direction were developed with the client. The focus was on presenting the product clearly.

My role

The client supplied the CAD model. I prepared the geometry for Blender and rendering, and handled UV mapping, textures, materials, environments, lighting and animation.

02 / DRAFT & LOOK DEVELOPMENT

From an early draft to the finished image.

The first draft focused on the sequence and movement. Predominantly white, simplified surfaces allowed us to review the animation before developing the final look for these passages.

Final film · materials and lighting Finished housing, dark display surface and animated light dots.

This draft shows the work at that stage. The closing environment already had an established visual direction, so the entire clip is not a pure clay render.

The comparison shows how the sequence, timing and surfaces developed towards the finished film.

The display follows the movement.

The animation sequences connect the rolling product with changing light patterns. Movement and visual direction were refined step by step through reviews with the client.

The final desk scene adds an everyday setting to the more abstract product views. I created the environment, materials and lighting for the render.

03 / THE OUTCOME

A product film with a visible development process.

The finished portrait film is approximately 25 seconds long. Comparing it with the early draft shows my contribution to production, from CAD preparation and animation reviews to materials, lighting and rendering.

Does your product need movement to explain how it works?

Send me CAD data or references and describe the function the film should demonstrate. We can then define the sequence and an appropriate production scope.
